A new study from WebFX reveals that AI-powered search is reshaping how users discover and engage with businesses online. Analyzing nearly 600,000 AI-driven sessions across 2,500 web pages, the research found that AI assistants are increasingly directing users to decision-stage and transactional content rather than top-of-funnel educational resources. The findings suggest that AI is shortening the traditional buying journey by connecting users with businesses when they are closer to making a purchase decision.
"For years, marketers have focused on attracting visitors at the top of the funnel," said Emily Carter, Senior Content Team Lead at WebFX. "Our research suggests AI search is changing where journeys begin, making decision-stage content more important than ever."
The study found that AI-generated traffic is heavily concentrated on content designed to support evaluation and purchasing decisions. More than 92% of AI sessions landed on consideration or decision-stage pages, while awareness-stage content accounted for only 2.3% of total AI traffic.
Decision-stage pages alone attracted 55.3% of all AI-driven visits, highlighting a significant shift in how users interact with businesses through AI-powered search experiences.
According to the research, AI users are arriving with stronger purchase intent than traditional search users. Nearly 68.9% of AI sessions landed on transactional pages, compared with just 18% that reached purely informational content.
The findings indicate that users are relying on AI assistants to compare products, services and providers before visiting a company's website. Rather than researching across multiple websites, users increasingly ask AI to evaluate options first and then visit a business's site to validate their preferred choice.
Beyond changing user behavior, AI-generated traffic is also proving more valuable for businesses. WebFX referenced a separate study showing that AI traffic converts 1.2 times higher than traditional organic search traffic, suggesting that visitors arriving through AI-powered search are more likely to take meaningful business actions.
These findings reinforce the growing importance of optimizing content for users who are already in the consideration and decision phases of the customer journey.
The research suggests that businesses should place greater emphasis on creating content that addresses buyer evaluation, competitive comparisons and purchasing decisions. As AI search continues to evolve, marketers may need to balance traditional awareness-focused content with assets that directly support high-intent prospects seeking immediate answers.
By understanding how AI assistants guide users through the buying process, organizations can better align their content strategies with changing search behavior and improve their ability to capture qualified traffic.
